"A problem caused the program to stop working" error when closing all Office apps, after opening network file

Office Pro Plus 2013

About two weeks ago, I started receiving the same error in all Office applications except Outlook when opening a file from a network location.  Word, Excel, PowerPoint and One Note all display the same error on Close if I opened a file from a network location.  .

* If I simply open/close the app without opening a file, no error.

* If I open a file on my local machine and close, no error.

* If I open a file on a network share then close - "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Please close the program."  The same file will not generate the error if I move it to my local machine and open it from there.

I have done a Repair and a complete uninstall/re-install - still getting the error.  I have also disabled all Add-ins in all Office apps; no change.  I even tried starting each application in Safe Mode; same error.

Below are details from Even Viewer for two of the errors:

Hi Mike1388,

Based on your event log message, your issue might be caused by csi.dll file.

csi.dll is simply a process used by your PC to open and execute the files that are required to run software and applications. If you are trying to launch a program but it cannot response, that means the associated csi.dll process are missing or corrupted from the Applications folder. Occasionally, Windows becomes unresponsive because more and more process like csi.dll file are corrupt or are an incorrect version that is not supported by the program or feature trying to access it.

A csi.dll file should only be located in the Windows\system32 folder of your pc as this is the default path where this file is designed to execute from. Unfortunately, some of the undetected spyware may be responsible for the csi.dll errors occurring on your computer by placing a file with the similar name. Moreover, an uninstall of a program that has been performed incorrectly or incompletely may also lead to the csi.dll errors.

The error can be caused by various reasons, generally, these situations below would easily make the computer result in the csi.dll error:

  • csi.dll file has been corrupted or deleted on the computer mistakenly
  • Related registry files has been damaged or corrupted
  • Windows or drivers have been out of date
  • Improper program installation or removal
  • Malicious spyware or virus invasion

To fix this error, you may firstly try some manual solutions with following methods.

Solution One: Update your Windows system

Outdated Windows system is often the case to affect the effective performance of those applications and files, and make some functions and services cannot be used smoothly on the computer. So you should go to check whether there has been a newer update version of the Windows system available online, and install it on your computer if there is.

Solution Two: Replace the problematic csi.dll with a compatible version.

1
Download a compatible version from trusted cyber source. Save it on hard disk.

2
Navigate the folder to c:\Windows\System32. Locate the problematic file. Rename the problematic one to csi.dll or another name you like.

3
Copy & paste the compatible version to C:\Windows\System32 folder.

4
Go to Windows system desktop, from the Taskbar, click Start, click Run. Type "cmd" onto the Run box, press Enter to run Command Prompt Line.

5
Type regsvr32 csi.dll onto the pop- up, press Enter. Click OK.

Please try these methods and let me know if theyre helpful. If the issue still exists, please let me know, Im glad to help and follow up your reply.

I found several different CSI.DLL files - looks to be three different versions, all under Programs Files (under Office or Microsoft Shared), but none under system32.  I also received a notification of several Office updates available for download - probably due to the recent uninstall/re-install.  I'll download all of those, then check for CSI.DLL again.

I also installed and ran OffCAT; it listed several things to look at, but I'll run it again after all of the downloads install.
